Fine Eye Productions

The Thief, The Priest and The Masterpiece

The brazen theft of Caravaggio’s magnificent portrait of St Jerome from Malta’s St John’s co-cathedral in 1984 is the start point to this remarkable true story. The painting’s recovery nearly three year’s later occurred because of the heroic efforts of a handful of loyal Maltese chief amongst them was then curator of Malta’s museums Fr Marius Zerafa. He bore the brunt of the strenuous and at times dangerous negotiations. Below is a link to my 1998 ABC Radio National radio documentary describing this amazing story. The program was first produced for ‘The Europeans’, producers were Maria Zylstra with script supervision by Peter Mears. Click here:

Doggett-Williams and crew stayed at the monks Northern Indian monastery in Dharamsala where he interviewed several elder monks. All told their stories for the first time.
